Contemporary Fantasy: Avery Nolan Adventures
Volumes 1 - 4
Volume 1 | Swift as a Shadow
Avery Nolan has a secret. A secret she guards fiercely. But everyone has secrets. Her mother who draws pictures of nightmarish creatures. Her grandmother with her padlocked shed. Her student with the pale eyes and brooding father. Leaving Sacramento after her divorce, Avery retreats to Tahoe with her golden retriever, Basil, looking for change, but as her grandmother always told her, “Be careful what you wish for.” After Basil discovers a hidden clearing with three standing stones, everything that Avery thinks she knows is suddenly upended. Each move she makes brings her closer to a world imagined only in fairytales and to unraveling the secrets her family has guarded for decades – secrets that will give Avery more adventure than she ever thought imaginable. |
Volume 2 | Short as any Dream
Avery moved to Lake Tahoe for the quiet. She didn’t get that. What she found made her question everything she knew about the world. Basil, her aging golden retriever, has aged in reverse. Her new neighbors make flowers grow in winter. And her student, pale-eyed Bay, can freeze a bully’s heart in his chest. Then there’s Duncan. After Duncan is captured in the Greensward, Avery thinks her biggest challenge is to rescue him, until ICE Agent Graham Braddock shows up at her door, claiming Duncan Sommerfeld is an illegal alien. Oh, if he only knew. Even so, she has to keep her promise to Bay – the promise that she would bring his father home to both of them, but how the heck did you accomplish the impossible? |
Volume 3 | Brief as Lightning
Avery Nolan promised six-year old Bay one thing – she’d bring his father home to him. That, however, was harder to accomplish than she’d thought. When Bay is abducted by his grandfather and taken to the Greensward, Avery now has two people depending on her, but she’s unable to find a way into the illusive land and no one seems able to help. Until a visit to her mother provides her with a cryptic message, “Find the rainbow people.” Avery has no idea what this means, but ICE agent Graham Braddock does and he thinks he may have found a portal into the Greensward. Except nothing is ever that easy. Taeseus, the Lord of the Frostfell, is not a man to take lightly. And then there’s Avery’s father. As Taeseus warns, “I am a tame house-cat compared to your father. You’d do well to understand that when you threaten to unleash a dragon such as he.” At this point, Avery doesn’t care. She’s about to unleash the dragon. |
Volume 4 | Momentary As A Sound
Avery Nolan worried for her friend, Agent Graham Braddock, when he chose to stay behind in the Frostfell, but she never expected to see him show up at her door, asking for her help. As she feared, scientists have found a way into the Greensward. Avery and Duncan agree to accompany Braddock back to the land they swore never to visit again, so they can stop a war that will tear apart both worlds. However, Avery’s father, Alberon, discovers his daughter’s involvement and has plans of his own. Alberon isn’t worried about preventing genocide as much as he’s interested in getting to know the daughter that he’d lost so long ago. |
